Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) of opioid use disorder involves a combination of medications that target the brain and psychosocial interventions (e.g., counseling, skills development) aimed at improving treatment outcomes. Research shows that medications and therapy together may be more successful than either treatment method alone.

Physicians must complete eight hours of training to apply to the DEA for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine, one of three medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid use disorder. The American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine offers virtual training free of charge.
