Session Info and Speaker Bio

Uma Erard, DO

Dr. Erard pursued medical studies at Nova Southeastern University before completing residency at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center. Following this, they specialized in Foot and Ankle care through a fellowship at Harborview Medical Center. With 15 years of dedicated service in the military, including three deployments to Afghanistan and Honduras, Dr. Erard brings extensive experience to their role. Presently, she serves as a Foot and Ankle orthopedic surgeon at Corewell Health West.

Common Orthopedic Issues Presenting to the Primary Care Provider

This talk will review common orthopedic issues that will present to the primary care provider.

Linsey Gilbert, DO

Linsey Gilbert, DO is a board-certified hospice and palliative care physician. She went to medical school at Michigan Stage College of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed Internal Medicine residency at Trinity Health Ann Arbor followed by a chief medicine year. She stayed at Trinity Health Ann Arbor for Fellowship where she now enjoys caring for patients full time doing palliative care and administratively as site medical director.

Complex Pain Management - Palliative Care Perspective

This session will discuss complex pain management in palliative care patients. We will review use of adjuvant therapies, Ketamine, Methadone, Buprenorphine and PCAs.


Eric Bouwens, MD

Eric Bouwens, MD, is a semi-retired family physician. He received his doctorate of medicine at University of Michigan and completed a residency in Family Medicine at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. He has worked in a variety of settings including the Migrant Health Service, urban clinics, private practice, and a substance abuse clinic. He has volunteered extensively in Guatemala and Exalta Clinic in Grand Rapids. He currently serves in the Trinity Health float pool in Sparta, Michigan.

Immigration Medicine

This session will challenge participants to consider health presentations and disease management from unfamiliar cultural points of view that will help the physician interpret complaints and behavior. In addition conditions uncommon in the US may be found more frequently in immigrants from some regions. A clinician's understanding will need to adapt as waves of immigration shift due to regional conflicts and climate change.


Liam R Sullivan, DO

Graduated from MSU-COM in 2007; internal medicine residency at MetroHealth (now UM Health West) followed by infectious disease fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. Have been practicing adult ID at Spectrum Health/Corewell Health West since August 2012. Special interests include infections in hematologic malignancies/bone marrow transplant and antimicrobial stewardship.

This session will review the recent outbreaks of pertussis and measles and discuss clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment & prevention options.


Nathan Fitton DO, FAOASM

Nathan Fitton DO, FAOASM is a primary care sports medicine physician at MSU. He serves as team physician for multiple sports including football, softball and wrestling. Dr. Fitton is the Co-director for the Sparrow Concussion Clinic as well as maintains a community outpatient clinic

Update on the Pre-Performance Examination

Review current standards of care regarding the evaluation of patients prior to participation including history gathering, exam, and testing.


Tina Metropoulos DO, DipABLM, eRYT-200

Dr. Metropoulos is a board-certified Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine physician who also earned her certification in Lifestyle Medicine. She went to medical school at MSUCOM after completing her undergraduate degree in Nutritional Sciences. An experienced fitness instructor, Dr. Metropoulos leads yoga in her community as well as anatomy for teacher training. She currently is part of a private practice group in Traverse City, Michigan, where she resides with her family. With a significant background in nutrition, fitness, and mindfulness, she incorporates lifestyle medicine tools in her primary care practice with a goal of improving the wellbeing and health of her patients and community.

Incorporating Lifestyle Medicine into Practice

In this session we will review the key pillars of Lifestyle Medicine and how they can be incorporated in the primary care setting as tools to help prevent and treat chronic disease.


Abbas Rizvi DO

Dr. Abbas Rizvi, DO is a current assistant professor of geriatric medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. He previously completed his Fellowship at Rush and prior to that, had completed his Family Medicine Residency at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc, MI. Dr. Rizvi works in the inpatient and outpatient settings as well as a part of Rush's home based primary care program, providing primary care services for home bound patients. He has a passion for using technology to assist in helping patients and families work to maintain safe and independent environments for their loved ones.

Outpatient to Inpatient: Managing Delirium and Dementia Agitation Episodes

This session will review the criteria for delirium as well as the categories of dementia and the current recommendations and goals of therapy in the management of delirium episodes as well as acute dementia associated agitation.


Timothy Swords DO

Tim Swords, DO completed undergraduate at the University of Saint Thomas, MN followed by medical school at ATSU-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. After finishing Family Medicine Residency at Ascension Genesys in Grand Blanc, MI, he received fellowship training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) at Trinity Health Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. Tim is board certified in both Family Medicine and HPM. He currently practices at Advocate-Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. The most fulfilling part of Tim’s role is helping patients and their families navigate serious illness.

We'll explore the principles, goals, and interventions of both palliative and hospice care, highlighting how each serves to enhance the quality of life for patients facing serious illnesses. Participants will gain insights into the holistic support offered by these disciplines, empowering them to better navigate and advocate for their patients.


Stacey M Ruff DO

Dr. Stacey Ruff is a board-certified Family Physician and Geriatrician practicing in Royal Oak, MI. She graduated from MSUCOM in 2010, then completed a residency in FM/OMM at Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital prior to a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Beaumont, now Corewell Health, in Royal Oak. She is clinical faculty at Oakland University and MSUCOM.

Advanced Care Planning and End of Life Care

This session is intended to meet the LARA requirement for 1 hour of the Ethics education needed for licensure in Michigan. It includes an overview of how to approach Advance Care Planning with our Primary Care patients and their families, as well as a general discussion of end-of life care options.
